Top 5 things to see at Surface Festival

This weekend, from Friday 4th to Sunday 6th March, Surface Festival will explore Canberra’s vibrant street art and culture. Presented by the ACT Government and curated by renowned graffiti artist PHIBS, Surface is an urban art festival and includes exhibitions, workshops, panel discussions, music and more.

The surface is designed to be enjoyed at your own pace and spans the lanes and walls of Braddon, Civic and the National Triangle. Visitors are encouraged to walk, ride or take public transport between festival sites.

With so much to see and so many ways to get involved, we’ve rounded up our top 5 ways to experience this year’s festival.

1. Live mural is a highlight of Surface. Follow the street art journey and discover the distinct styles of 35 artists painted on 30 different surfaces.

  • When: For the duration of the festival – from Friday March 4th 10:00 a.m. to Sunday March 6th 4:00 p.m.
  • Or: Take the 5km Street Art Trail through Braddon, Civic and National Triangle (See street art trail map)

2. Featuring mural artists from the festival, the “Under the Surface” exhibit showcases a diverse range of urban art on canvas, board, paper and more. You can also get involved and sign up for a range of workshops to learn street art techniques.

  • When: For the duration of the festival – from Friday March 4th 10:00 a.m. to Sunday March 6th 4:00 p.m.

3. The “Boogie Down Under Block Party” celebrates all things Surface and features live bands, DJs and dance performances. Put on your dancing shoes and join us.

  • When: Saturday March 5, 3:00 p.m. – 6:00 p.m.
  • Or: Scott’s Crossing, central Canberra

4. See some of the country’s best urban artists at work at Graffiti Paint Jam. Rabaul Lane is the perfect place to experience street art in its purest form.

5. End the weekend at the closing party of the festival where you will have the opportunity to meet some of the participating artists.

  • What: BentSpoke Surface Festival Closing Party
  • When: Sunday March 6, 3:00 p.m. – 6:00 p.m.
  • Or: BentSpoke Brew Pub, 48/38 Mort Street, Braddon

Through the Graffiti program, the ACT government commissions murals and street art to bring color, tell stories and inspire local communities across the capital.
